Terms of Service
Last updated: 5 October 2026
1. Overview
peedee.es (also referred to as "Peedee") is operated by Bernhard van Staveren, EI, a French sole proprietorship trading as Bearded Dutchman Services (SIREN 922 817 093, registered at 49c rue Saint-Georges, 71100 Chalon-sur-Saone, France) - referred to in these Terms as "we," "us," or "peedee.es." We provide hosting for AT Protocol personal data servers ("PDS") and related services.
These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your access to and use of the peedee.es website and services (together, the "Services"). By using the Services, you agree to these Terms and to our Privacy Policy.
2. Eligibility and AT Protocol accounts
You must be at least 18 years old and capable of entering into a legally binding contract to use the Services.
We use the AT Protocol for authentication. Your peedee.es identity is associated with your AT Protocol decentralized identifier ("DID") and handle. You are responsible for maintaining control of your AT Protocol credentials and any devices or authentication methods used to access your account.
Unlike services that merely rely on a PDS operated elsewhere, we operate the PDS itself when you host with us. We are responsible for the availability and security of the PDS infrastructure we host for you, subject to the limitations described elsewhere in these Terms.
Because your AT Protocol identity authenticates through the PDS we host for you, suspension or deletion of your hosting (see Sections 6 and 10) can affect your ability to sign in with that identity. Where your PDS is unavailable, you may sign in to your dashboard using the recovery codes issued to you at account creation; keep them somewhere safe.
3. Public AT Protocol records
AT Protocol repository records are public by design. Anything placed in your repository may be publicly accessible, and may be collected, indexed, cached, archived, copied, or redistributed by third parties, regardless of what we do on our end.
If you have domains registered with Marque and choose to attach one to a PDS we host, we will automatically configure the DNS and related records needed to make that work. This is currently the only case in which we write records to your PDS on your behalf, and we only do so as a direct result of an action you take and confirm. Deleting or changing a record afterward does not guarantee that copies already obtained by third parties will also be deleted or changed.
4. Pricing and payments
Prices are displayed before you complete a purchase. We use Stripe to process payments. By submitting an order, you authorize peedee.es and Stripe to charge your selected payment method for the recurring amounts associated with the Services you've ordered.
Prices are shown exclusive of VAT. We are not currently VAT-registered (Article 293 B of the French General Tax Code), so no VAT is charged. If that changes, updated prices will be shown before purchase and at renewal.
5. Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer in the European Union, you normally have a 14-day right of withdrawal on distance contracts. Because provisioning your PDS begins immediately after purchase at your express request, you acknowledge that by completing an order you ask us to begin performance before the withdrawal period ends, and that once your PDS has been provisioned you lose the right of withdrawal in accordance with Article L221-28 of the French Consumer Code. You can still cancel at any time under Section 6.
6. Upgrades, downgrades, and cancellation
Hosting is billed in advance according to the billing interval shown at purchase. Unless canceled, recurring services renew automatically and your payment method will be charged at each renewal.
Upgrades take effect immediately and may result in an immediate, prorated charge. Downgrades also take effect immediately, and any difference is credited toward your next payment rather than refunded directly. To avoid rapid back-and-forth changes, there is a one-day cooldown after each change to a given kind of storage (data or media) - you cannot change that storage again until 24 hours after its last change took effect. Reducing data storage stops your PDS for a few minutes while your data is moved to the smaller volume; we'll tell you this before you confirm.
You may cancel your hosting at any time through your account. Cancellation takes effect at the end of your current billing period - you retain access until then, and won't be charged again afterward. When it takes effect, your PDS is shut down and permanently deleted straight away - there is no read-only period after a voluntary cancellation. Its stored media files are erased from our storage provider within 3 days of that. If the people you host need time to move their accounts elsewhere, give them notice and export or migrate before your cancellation takes effect.
7. Failed payments, read-only mode, and deletion
If a recurring payment fails, we may retry it and will provide a grace period of 7 days from the failed attempt, during which your PDS keeps working normally.
If payment still hasn't succeeded by the end of that period, we switch your PDS to read-only mode. In read-only mode the PDS stays online, and you and the people you host can still sign in, read and export your data (AT Protocol repository and media export), and move accounts to another provider (including the identity operations that requires), but nothing new can be written or uploaded. Your dashboard is limited to the information needed to resolve the situation. Paying the outstanding amount at any point before your subscription is cancelled restores normal operation.
If the service remains unpaid, the subscription is cancelled automatically at the end of our payment-retry process (your dashboard shows the expected date). After cancellation your PDS stays in read-only mode for 14 days, so the people you host can still take their data and accounts elsewhere, and is then permanently deleted, along with all associated data (stored media files are erased from our storage provider within 3 days of the deletion). Deleted content is unrecoverable. See Section 8 for what that means for your own backups.
If a payment for storage used above your quota (overage) fails, we block new media uploads to your PDS until it's settled; everything else keeps working. We'll contact you about any overage that remains unpaid.
8. Backups and availability
We don't take backups or copies of your PDS. The underlying storage is redundant for availability, not retained as a backup. If you want your own copy of your data, you're welcome to back it up yourself (AT Protocol's repository export functionality, for instance); doing so is entirely up to you and outside anything we provide or guarantee.
We don't guarantee any particular level of uptime or availability unless expressly agreed with you in writing (typically only for custom orders with their own service-level agreement). Routine software updates and security-related work may affect service availability from time to time.
9. Acceptable use
You may not use the Services to: violate applicable law; distribute malware or other malicious code; carry out phishing, credential theft, fraud, or impersonation; send spam or unsolicited bulk messages; run a service whose main purpose is to facilitate unlawful activity; infringe someone else's intellectual property or other rights; attack, probe, disrupt, or gain unauthorized access to systems or networks that aren't yours; interfere with other users or with the Services themselves; get around security measures, abuse prevention, billing, or resource limits; mine cryptocurrency using shared hosting resources; or use a disproportionate share of shared resources in a way that noticeably degrades the service for other customers.
You also may not use the Services to produce, host, or distribute content that constitutes hate speech, harassment, or discrimination on the basis of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion, disability, sex, gender identity or expression (including transphobic content), or sexual orientation; child sexual abuse material; or terrorist content within the meaning of Regulation (EU) 2021/784.
If you host accounts for other people on your PDS, you are responsible for ensuring their use also complies with this section.
We may investigate suspected violations of this section and may restrict, suspend, or terminate the affected service where we reasonably believe it's necessary to protect peedee.es, our infrastructure or providers, other users, or third parties, or to comply with the law. Where circumstances allow, we'll give you notice and a chance to fix the problem before taking that step; where we reasonably believe urgent action is needed - for security, legal compliance, abuse prevention, or to protect the Services - we may act immediately instead.
10. Suspension and termination
You can stop using the Services and cancel your PDS at any time, subject to any outstanding charges. We may suspend or terminate your access to some or all of the Services if you materially breach these Terms, fail to pay amounts owed, create a security or operational risk, engage in prohibited activity (Section 9), or if continuing to provide the service to you would breach the law or a binding obligation we have to one of our own providers.
When we suspend a PDS for a breach of these Terms, we normally switch it to the same read-only mode described in Section 7 rather than shutting it down, so the people you host can still sign in, export their data and move their accounts elsewhere while the matter is resolved. Where the law or an urgent risk requires it, we may instead take the PDS offline entirely.
Termination doesn't erase obligations or liabilities that arose before it took effect. Provisions that are meant to outlive termination by their nature - including payment obligations, intellectual-property terms, disclaimers, limitations of liability, and dispute-related provisions - continue to apply after termination.
11. Illegal content: notice and action (Digital Services Act)
peedee.es is a hosting service within the meaning of Regulation (EU) 2022/2065 (the Digital Services Act, "DSA"). Anyone may notify us of content hosted on our infrastructure that they consider illegal by emailing legal@peedee.es.
For us to act on a notice, it must contain:
- an explanation of why you consider the content to be illegal;
- the exact location of the content (for example the AT Protocol URI or the URL at which it is served), so we can identify it;
- your name and email address, unless the notice concerns an offence under Articles 3 to 7 of Directive 2011/93/EU (child sexual abuse), in which case you may remain anonymous;
- a statement that you believe in good faith that the information in the notice is accurate and complete.
We will acknowledge receipt of your notice, review it without undue delay, and tell you what we decided and why. Where we remove or disable access to content, we will inform the customer whose PDS hosted it, give reasons, and explain how they can contest the decision. Notices that are manifestly unfounded or submitted repeatedly in bad faith may be disregarded after a warning.
Where content is hosted on a PDS operated for one of our customers, we may forward the notice to that customer and give them a short period to act before we do, except where the content is manifestly illegal or the law requires immediate removal.
Our single point of contact under Articles 11 and 12 of the DSA is listed on the Legal Mentions page.
Automated detection of child sexual abuse material. To keep child sexual abuse material ("CSAM") off our infrastructure, we check the images and videos uploaded to every PDS we host against lists of known child sexual abuse material maintained by child-protection organisations. This check applies to every PDS we host and can't be switched off. Files are checked through the Arachnid Shield service of the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, as described in our Privacy Policy.
Where a file matches known child sexual abuse material, we quarantine it straight away: the PDS stops serving it, and the file is set aside rather than deleted. Where a file matches other known harmful or abusive material involving children, a member of our team reviews it before anything is done. We tell you when we quarantine a file on your PDS, and you can contest that decision as described above; a file we quarantined can only be released by us. We report apparent child sexual abuse material to the competent authorities as the law requires, and may preserve the file and the related records for as long as the law or those authorities require.
12. Disclaimer of warranties
To the fullest extent the law allows, the Services are provided "as is" and "as available." We don't promise that they'll be uninterrupted, error-free, completely secure, or fit for every possible use, or that your PDS, its data, certificates, AT Protocol records, or any other part of the Services will always remain available. Nothing in these Terms excludes a warranty or right that can't lawfully be excluded.
13. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent the law allows, Bernhard van Staveren, EI, and its personnel and contractors won't be liable for indirect, incidental, special, consequential, exemplary, or punitive damages, or for lost profits, revenue, business, goodwill, data, or opportunities arising from or related to the Services. To the fullest extent the law allows, our total liability arising from or related to a given service won't exceed the amount you paid us for that specific service during the 12 months immediately before the event giving rise to the claim. These limits don't apply wherever the law doesn't allow them, and nothing in these Terms excludes liability for death, personal injury, fraud, or gross negligence.
14. Indemnification
To the extent the law allows, you agree to defend, indemnify, and hold harmless Bernhard van Staveren, EI, and its personnel and service providers from claims, liabilities, damages, losses, and reasonable expenses arising from content you host, your breach of these Terms, your breach of applicable law, or your infringement of someone else's rights.
15. Changes to the Services or these Terms
We may modify, replace, add to, or discontinue features, providers, infrastructure, plans, or services as our business and the underlying technology evolve. We may also update these Terms from time to time. The current version is always posted at peedee.es/terms, with its "last updated" date kept current. For material changes, we'll give you additional notice through your account, by email, or by another reasonable means, when the law requires it or it's otherwise appropriate to do so.
Unless we state a different effective date, updated Terms take effect once posted - except where the law requires advance notice or your consent, in which case changes take effect as that law requires. If you keep using the Services after updated Terms take effect, that counts as accepting them, to the extent the law allows treating it that way.
16. Governing law and disputes
These Terms are governed by French law, without regard to conflict-of-law principles, except to the extent that mandatory consumer-protection law that applies to you requires otherwise. Nothing in these Terms limits any rights you may have under mandatory consumer-protection law in your place of residence.
If you are a consumer and a dispute with us has not been resolved after a prior written complaint to legal@peedee.es, you may refer it, free of charge, to our consumer mediator within one year of that complaint:

17. Entire agreement and severability
These Terms, together with the Privacy Policy, the Data Processing Agreement, and any service-specific terms expressly incorporated into them, make up the entire agreement between you and peedee.es regarding the Services. If any provision turns out to be unenforceable, the rest remain in effect to the extent the law allows. If we don't enforce a provision on one occasion, that doesn't waive our right to enforce it later.
